Employee engagement

Employee productivity is a foundational requirement for a company’s success. When employees aren’t productive, organizational growth is stunted. The amount of work produced in a given time can drive costs up or down.

The productivity of employees impacts both direct and indirect labor costs. A direct labor cost is how long it takes employees to complete their tasks. Indirect labor costs include healthcare benefits. An effective wellness program can help drive down healthcare costs and increase employee engagement.

Here are three tips that can boost productivity, lower costs and increase profitability.

  1. Adjust company culture to better support employee needs.

Company culture has a large impact on employee productivity. You don’t read company culture in the signs on the walls. You read company culture in the eyes and hearts of your employees.

Supporting employee well-being is no longer optional in today’s workplace. Positive reinforcement and expression of appreciation from direct supervisors go a long way towards shaping company culture. It also drives productivity and employee well-being.

Employees want to do a good job. They also want to know that their job matters. For companies to optimize productivity, employees must understand how and why their work matters.

  2. Tailor your wellness program to employee needs.

Whether your company has had a wellness program for years or is just considering adding one, the wellness program must be tailored to employee needs. Wellness programs are meant to support your employees’ well-being. In turn, companies also benefit and can see a positive impact on their bottom line.

To optimize ROI, the program must be focused on empowering employees and their areas of interest to reach a high engagement rate. Whether it is stress management, nutrition, financial health, fitness or something else, the wellness program must be attractive to fully engage employees.

  3. Incentivize employee health.

When people feel healthier, they are happier and are more likely to produce quality work efficiently. They show up with an active presence and purpose, which demonstrates their engagement and leads to greater job satisfaction.

Incentivizing employees can be scaled based on the structure of your organization. Incentives can include earning an extra PTO day, a gym membership, a gift card and more.

Healthier employees also drive down healthcare costs. If your company is self-insured, the savings quickly add up. If your company has an insurance provider, the savings can result in steady insurance premiums.
Wellness programs can have a significant impact on both productivity and healthcare costs. And like any other program, incentivizing healthy behaviors creates an opportunity for positive change and fosters a culture of health in the workplace.
