There is no doubt that employees need a break. Vacation time allows employees to spend time with family and friends all while recharging and fighting burnout. While time off is crucial to employee wellbeing, many don't take full advantage of their PTO offerings. In fact, employees left 33% of their vacation days unused during COVID. Even prior to the pandemic, 768 million days of vacation time went unused. To help with these numbers, employers need to encourage their people to take time off. This may come in the form of mandatory minimums or unlimited PTO, but each have their pros and cons. Additionally, when employers categorize their PTO benefits, such as parental leave, sick time, vacation or bereavement, it lets employees know that their organization sees the whole them, both as a worker and outside of work. Employees may even be more willing to take time of they have these specific reasons to do so. So, will we see PTO policies change? If so, how?
